ALLEGKU THEFT,

James Burnett, who described himself as a miner, was charged, on suspicion, with having, on June 18. stolen 30 lbs. of tobacco, 32 tins of jam, and 10 lbs. of candles. The police applied for a remand for seven days to enable them to get up the evidence. The

accused said he came by the goods honestly t they formed part of his stock when he kept a store at Bendigo Gully, and were obtained from Mr John Griffon some eight months ago. The tobacco he acquired by card-play* iug, receiving plugs instead of drinks. Detective Farrell said the accused had obtained the goods from Mr Griffen five years ago, and forgot to pay for them. The remand applied for was granted, AN UNDUTIFUL SON, Mrs Wright, a widow, applied to the Court that some steps should be taken to place her sou in the Industrial School. She had five children to support; and this boy, whose age was twelve and a-half years, was entirely beyond her control. His Worship instructed the police to take action in the matter. BYE-LAW CASES. John Morrison, allowing the chimney of his house to take fire was fined 2s 6d and costs. Cases against Henry Browrigg, driving without a license, and John Iveson, no number oil a ’bus, were dismissed with a caution.
