TELEGRAPHIC COMMUNICATION FROM AUSTRALIA TO ENGLAND.
It may be interesting, now that the telegraph line between England -and Australia is so near absolute completion, to give the distances spanned in each stage, and the points from which the extension is carried on. The South Australian portion of the telegraph will stretch in a somewhat diagonal direction across the continent from from Port Augusta, 32J deg. S. lat, 1375 deg- E. long, to Palmerstone, Port Darwin 12$ degs. S. lat, 130| degs, E. long., about 1400 miles in a direct line, but from 1700 to 1800 miles as the line is laid. The subjoined table shows the route followed in connecting Australia with, the mother country, with the length of wire or cable between tho different places, and the total distance traversed by message :
