The Board of Health meets to-day, to consider the advisability of declaring Auckland an infected port, and quarantining all Auckland vessels.
The Pod last night suggested the calling of a public meeting to urge the Government to quarantine the Luna and Wellington, and to postpone the meeting of the Assembly, if necessary. Arrived.—-Rangatira, from Napier.
Auckland, July 13. A boy named Harrison is reported dead at Drury of small pox. William Nixon Morton, formerly Inspector of Police in Otago, died in the Lunatic Asylum from exhaustion owing to extreme attacks of delirium. The General Government sent down a force of the Armed Constabulary from the Waikato, to prevent any disturbance b ■ tW(.en the Orangemen and Hibernians at the Thames. Two thousand Hibernians paraded Grahamatowu yesterday, and a collision was imminent. The Orangemen did not have a procession. Mr Gardner has re-opened bis boardinghouse.
The clerk of the Bank of New Zealand, whose death was reported on Thursday, died of malignant typhus fever. The body turned quite black.
Wellington, July 12. 12,15 p.m.
A deputation waited upon the Editor of the Even> nr/ Post this morning, and urged him to call the attention of the Government to the necessity of immediate steps being taken to quarantine all Auckland Jvcssels. r lhe Mayor has waited upon the Colonial Secretary, and asked him to consider what ste s arc necessary. Cantab Kennedy has been specially engaged, by Mr Brogden to command a steamer to be chartered by the Messrs Brogden, to bring stores, etc., from Australia. He proceeds to Australia on Monday, by the Albion, to chat ter the vessel. The Rangatira sails to night for Napier with Mr Brogden’s navvies. 2.40 p.m.
The Board of Health, after two hours’ deliberation, have nude the following recommendation All vessels from Auckland to be quarantined for twenty-four hours. The passengers, mails, etc,, to be fumigated and careful examination be made If any disease be discovered the quarantine to be prolonged. The Board also recommends the establishment of central hospitals in every town in the colony, the introduction of Compulsory Vaccination Bills, and the exercise of precautions at all uninfected ports at which local Health Boards shall regulate the communication with vessels. An induentially-signcd requisition has been presented to the Superintendent, requesting him to call a public meeting, there being great d issatisfaction with the recommendation of the Board of Health, twentyfeur hours quarantine being considered insufficient. It is probable the public meeting will be held on Monday.
