FLOGGING IN THE NAVY.

We thought this barbarous punishment was a thing°of the past, but judging by the following we were mistaking. Referring to the recent flogging case in the Auckland harbor, the >S7 av of the 24th says :—“ It appears that our harbor has been defiled by the barbarous and infamous exhibition of two men being flogged. And this has been done under the shadow of the flag that braved a thousand years the battle and the breeze. On Saturday morning, about 8 o’clock, when a schooner was sailing past the Rosario, those on board weie horror stricken at hearing the most fearful shrieks on hoard of the Queen’s ship. “For God’s sake put me down,” in the most heartrending accents, mingled again and again with smothered choking moans from the human butchery proceeding. It appears that for some infraction of the rules of discipline all hands had been piped on deck to sec the power of authority as exhibited the quivering frames of two fellow-beings. The one unhappy man received thirtysix lashes wc understand, and the other forty-two ; and we have no doubt the exhibition will serve to whet the appetite for blood of the sailors and marines of the Rosario for shooting down defenceless islanders in satisfaction for the death of Christian missionaries ; and the officers of the Rosario after washing their hands, will appear again among onr citizens refined and cnltivatod English gentlemen. _
