PORT CHALMERS MAYORALTY.

To the Editor. Sir. —In your last night’s issue you mentioned that the forthcoming Mayoral elections are likely to cause some stir ; but you seem altogether to have omitted the claims of Port Chalmers to your notice. Now, sir, I thiuk that no Mayoralty in the Province requires a more radical change than tbe Port, as shown by the fact of their selling thefr debentures at fo ; whilst wc in Dunedin, at the saiqe date, were getting readily 102. Surely this must open the eyes of the electors at the Port to the necessity of returning men at the forthcoming election who will look after the ratepayers, and not private interest. It has been rumored that Mr David Miller will again contest the seat for the ward he so ably represented since the foundation of the Corporation; and I feel certain, had be been returned at the last e*ection,’ we should have heard strong objections on his part to such a miserable failure as selling the debentures so low, as he was one who always refused the selling under par. Again, there is that nice little pavement job requires some investigation why 15s 6d per yard should be paid, when aspha'te would have answered a great deal better, at 3s per yard. For the Mayoral chair, it is current I)r Drysdale, M r Taylor, A. M ‘Kinnon, and H. M‘Demid are likely to contest the election. Surely, with such a number to choose from, it will be the ratepayers’ own fault if they suffer a repetition of such reckless management.—l am, &c., IS Dunedin, July 3, 1872,
