Sec, THE MAYORALTY. rjpO THE CITIZENS OF DUNEDIN. Gentlemen,— As the time is drawing nigh when you will be called upon to elect a gentleman to fill the office of Mayor of the City, and from the many pressing invitations I have received, by deputation and otherwise, to allow myself to be placed in nomination for that honourable position, I feel were I to remain’ silent any longer without avowing to my friends and supporters my inability for the present to contest the election, I shall be doing not only an injustice to them but to those gentlemen who may be desirous of seeking the suffrages of the electors. Proud as I feel of the compliment my fellow-citizens would confer upon me and fully sensible as I am of the good opinion thus evinced of my conduct as a representative in the City Council, of one of the most important wards of the City for the past two years, I feel, however, I must for the present respectfully decline to allow myself to be placed in nomination, as my many pressing business engagements will not admit of my devoting the time so absolutely necessary for a due fulfilment of the requirements of the office. I trust, however, that should another occasion present itself, I shall then be in a position to offer myself as a candidate. In the meantime I throw myself on the electors of High Ward, seeking re-election at their hands, trusting my past actions have been such as to warrant their support. I shall take an early opportunity of addressing the electors throughout the ward before the polling day and give an account of my stewardship, I remain, gentlemen, Yours faithfully, A. MERCER.
