MAYOR’S COURT.

Tins Hay. (Before the Mayor, R. H. Leary, Esq., J.P., and James Black, Esq., J.P.) DRUNKENNESS, John alias Jefferson Hereford was lined ss. ASSAULT. Elizabeth George charged Margaret Hickey with this offence. As the defendant did not appear, a warrant was ordered to be issued for her apprehension. A rehearing of the case of Roy v. Mayne was fixed for Thursday, the Justices who tried it stating that they granted it from a desire to err, if err they should, on the side of leniency. The application, which was based on the discovery of fresh evidence, was supported by Mr E. Cook, and opposed by Mr Stewart. The applicant was ordered to pay costs of the first hearing. SNOWBALLING. Louis Westland, a young man, was charged with throwing snowballs in the Botanical Gardens, to the danger of passers by. Being a first offence, he was let off with a caution. GAMBLING. Louis Court, proprietor of the Otago Hotel, was summoned for allowing gambling in his licensed house on the 18th Apiil. The proceedings were brought in consequence of the disclosures made in the case of Prince v. Gallagher in the Magistrate’s Court lately. The defendant pleaded guilty.

The police gave himself and his house a good character } in consequence of which the Mayor said he was Inclined to deal leniently with the case. If the offence was repeated he would impose the full penalty, and take steps to get the license cancelled. Defendant was fined L 5.
