NEW INVENTION.

To the Editor. SIK, —I notice in your issue of tlie 10th inst. a paragraph stating that a patent has been taken out in Victoria by Dr Sorley, of this City, for an invention to propel boats, steamships, or vessels without the aid of paddle-wheel or screw propeller. All I mean now to say is—Success to every such attempt in the path of wisdom, as 1 am greatly

helped in believing that I have not spent my leisure hours in vain. Upwards of three years ago I made a model of an atmospheric engine, which is intended to propel an upright propeller, as shown on the same model two years ago. I have communicated with his Excellency the Governor for protection, in order to have my inventions put into practice, but my candle was kept under a bushel. However, some five months ago I put the latter part of my model into practice, and found it answering the purpose. Another important acquisition is a life safety escapement, without either blocksjor pulleys, the roping is simply coiled round the shafts of my propellers, and made to propel fore and aft. To act thus, the weight of the boit with it living freight speedily and safely propels itself on the most tempestuous sea with all the safety of an ocean bird ; the man who holds the rudder lowers the boat at one and the same time with perfect ease and alacrity, I shall now simply invito all aspirants to the simple but important system of life preservation and economy of labor, as well as the Government to inspect my inventions, which I shall be ready to show at any time.—l am, &c. Wm. M'Lennan. Filleul street.
