WATER OF LEITH VALLEY ROAD.
To the Editor,
Sir, —In your issue of May 23 a deputation from Waikari and Pine * i ill effected an interview with the Superintendent. Such may have been the case ; but as no board or commissioners have existed on Pine Hill for the past five months, I protest against any individual adopting a hole-and-corner style of attempting to saddle Pine Hill with any further liabilities without the knowledge of the ratepayers in general. I have not the slightest objection to Mr M'Glashan getting as much as possible for a right-of-way through his property, but I do protest against saw millers and quarry proprietors attempting to increase the debt of the district for their convenience, as, in my opinion, the deputation and others are the only parties that should pay the balance due over and above the LSOO to be paid by the Government, as, by using the said road, Lls per annum per cart, going two times a day to Dunedin, is saved to the above parties, whereas the settlers of Pine Hill have to pay the toll; and in justice to the settlers of Pine Hill, they ought not to be asked to purchase a road they can never use. Already the district is indebted L2OO, for which a mandamus was granted two years ago. There is also LGO incurred by the late Board ; and no doubt other debts exist, but the ratepayers can have no knowledge of them till it suit the convenience of the General Road Board to order an audit for the year about to close, aud insert it in the Gazette. —l am, &c. A Ratepayer. Pine Hill, May 28.
