May; 120 are to be sent to Auckland, 150 to Wellington, 400 to Napier, 130. to Picton (via Wellington), 500 to Canterbury, COO to Otago, besides about 300 are to be sent to various ports under the auspices of Messrs Brog len. The total number will be composed of 1400 British, COO Germans, and 200 Scandinavians. The Germans are to be sent in equal proportions to Canterbury and Otago, and the Scandinavians to Napier. , A Washington telegram of April 20th says the Postal Committee of Congress has reported the Posfal Appropriations Bill with amendments, doubling the China and Brazil steamship service and subsidies. The inquiry re the complaints of compositors in the Government Printing Office takes place to-day.

Lyttelton, May 27. The document published in the Christchurch Star relative to the ship Matoaka, alleged to have been picked ur» off the Ocean Beach near Dunedin, is written apparently on the sheet of a note-book with pencil. It purports to have been written by the first mate, and states he and some A.B.’s in long boat were making for the S.W. of New Guinea, and that all passengers were lost.
