THE LATE ACCIDENT AT THE OCEAN BEACH.

To the Editor. Sir, I was astonished to learn from “Sympathy’s” letter that the officers of volunteers had expressed themselves as bein" in no way called upon, more than tlie geneial public, to assist in alleviating the distress of the family of the young man who met with the accident. In charity to them, I hope the report is incorrect. If true, lam ashamed of them. It is an undeniable fact that the public looked to the Volunteers as being called upon, in a peculiar manner, to make reparation as far as they could.; and I am gpre the Volunteers were ready to do so. I J&ve not mentioned the matter to any who dirt not at once signify his willingness to confcjtjjute whenever asked ; and naturally we idpked to our officers to take the initiative. aSiey, it seems, have failed to do their duty in this matter. It remains now for the Volunteers themselves to take it up, if for no other reason than to save themselves from disgrace; for it will be an indelible disgrace to us as a body, if we do nothing to assist the unfortunate sufferer. Seeing that you have expressed your willingness to take charge of any subscriptions for the above object, I have much pleasure in .enclosing mine, and I trust the example will ii>e speedily followed.—Yonr’s, &c. Voi.untker. May 25. v i [A “Working Man” contributes his mite 'to the fund, and hopes others of his class will do likewise. — Ed. E.S.]
