DEPARTMENTAL REPORT.
THE HIGH SCHOOL. The Rector, in his annual report presented to the Provincial Council a few days ago, says of the school attendance during the past year ;—“ From my report for the year 1870, which was sent to your office, but, contrary to the usual piactice, was not printed in the departmental reports, it wi'l be seen that the average attendance for that year was 120 ; the number on the school rolls for the four quarters being respectively 116, 121, 122, and 124. There has been a gradual increase in the number of pupils attending the school for the last three years ; the number on the school roll being for the year 1860 seventy ; for 1870, eighty-eight; and for 1871, one hundred and twenty ; and it is probable there will be an increase during the present year, the number of pupils iu attendance [during the first quarter being 137. It must be remembered that this increase has taken place concurrently with the rejection of a considerable number of boys who failed to pass the entrance examination, which was held, in accordance with the regulation of the Board, at the beginning of each year.” GAIOL CHAPLAIN. Mr Torrance, after explaining that he has only exceptional opportunities of ascertaining what has been the effect of hi* labors among prisoners, says :—“The few instances 1 have had of knowing the course of life pur-
auedbjjf (Jjwibafjjed prisoners on leaving the attentions are unmistakeably more or lees desired, show that my labors are not in vain. 1 can speak of a number of men, once drunkards and criminals, who are now living a steady and respectable life; and the letters sent me by others who have settled in distant place* must be accepted as evidence of their rectitude, as, being beyond reach of any help from me, the}' could have no object in deo iving me. As far as lies in my power,. 1 help discharged prisoners to begin, life anew respectably, by endeavoring, to obtain situations for them, or the means to leave the Colony.”
