CITY COUNCIL.
The following business was transacted at last night’s meeting : Two letters from the Under-Secretary were read. The first was to the effect that the Government did not recognise the report of the City Council to claim payment for the kerbing the foot-path abutting on sec. 59, block 32, Dunedin; and that the land would put up to auction again, the Government agreeing to return to the Corporation the deposit which had been forfeited. The second letter was dated a week later, and stated that the Council in asking for the cancellation of the sale aud the return of the deposit misapprehended the purport i f the previous letter, which was to the effect that owing to the non-completion of the sale, the Council had {forfeited its deposit; but as it had expressed a desire to complete the sale, the Government had agreed to sell the land again, treating the deposit as part of the payment for the second purchase. The Waterworks Committee’s report intimated that in view of the possession of the waterworks by the Corporation, Messrs Smith and Anderson had been instructed to draft a Bill for introduction into the General Assembly to enlarge the rating powers of the Corporation. The Works Committee reported having called the attention of the Government to the state of the main road, east of the Octagon ; and in respect of Mr Bathgate’s claim for compensation for damage done to his property k by the alterations to Pitt street, that the Council disclaimed all legal responsibility. Messrs Black and Thomson wrote, declining to lease the portion of the Southern Market Reserve, the subject of recent negotiations between and the Council.
The following motion by Councillor Livingston was carried : “ That the Government be requested to transfer to the City Council that part of the old cemetery reserve formerly used as a burial ground, to be kept iu order by the Council; the remainder of the reserve to be subject to the same conditions of management as the Town Belt.” Mr Barnes suggested that the General Government should be requested to relieve the Council from the payment of stamp duties ; Mr Neale suggested that measures should be taken to bring under one system, similar to that in vogue fix Melbourne, the water-closets aud cesspools in the City ; and suggestions were made by Mr Livingstpn as to the terms of the new leases pf the Corporation properties.
