THE LATE ACCIDENT AT THE OCEAN BEACH.

To the Editor, Sir, —I was just on the point of suggesting to the Volunteers the propriety of their doing something towards assisting the family of the young man who was shot, but as I notice that a correspondent has forestalled me, I beg most heartily to support the proposal. There may be differences of opinion as to where the bullet came from, and I confess that I am one of those who are not at all convinced that it was fired by the Volunteers who were practising at the range; but, be that as it may, there can be no gainsaying th,e stern fact that the man was severely wounded, and that it will be a long time before he will be able to resume bis employment. Under these circumstances, I think it is the least we can do to give some assistance, and render the consequences of the accident as light to him and his family as possible. It only wants a beginning, and I do hope that the officers of the various companies will see it to be their duty to collect subscriptions among their own men. There is one tbing I most decidedly object to in your paragraph, and that is the mention of 3d a man as being sufficient. I do not be.

lieve there is a man in the force who could not afford to five 2s 6d without feeling it in the least; and, if so, I earnestly hope there is not one who will be stingy enough to refuse it. It is to the officers that we look to set the affair going. Yours, &c., Volunteer, Dunedin, May 16.
