Temperance.—The usual concert of the Abstainers’ Union was held last evening in the Oddfellows’ Hall. An ample evening’s amusement was provided : the programme comprising vocal and instrumental music, readings, and recitations, which the audience seemed thoroughly to enjoy. We hope to see these periodical reunions well attended during the season. At the close of the concert, the chairman intimated that the Rev. T. Roseby, M.A..L.L.R, would deliver the next lecture on Wednesday, 29th inst. Subject—“ Total Abstinence Tested ; or, What saith the Scriptures ?” Anderson’s Bay Shooting Case. — A correspondent desires us to bring under the notice of the volunteers the case of the young man who was shot by some volunteers practising at the Anderson’s Bay Range on the Thanksgiving Day. Young’s family are but recent arrivals in the country, having come here about two month’s ago ; and the sufferer and an elder brother are the support of their parents. The latter has been obliged to leave his situation in the country, and assist those who are nursing his brother. The case is undoubtedly one of great hardship ; and our correspondent offers a Bug-
gestion which might well be acted upon. He aays :—“ As the family arc deprived at once of the help of the two sons—to say nothing about the anxiety the young man’s present position must cause his parents—l venture to suggest that the officers of ( the volunteers should request their companies to pay a small sum each per man—say 3d. This may pay for medical attendance and for the support of the afflicted family.” Lecture.—Mr J. G, S. Grant delivered a lecture ou “Spiritualism” in the lower room of the Athenaeum last evening, and this is what one of the twenty nine who were present says of it: —“ All that he gave the people for their shilling was bold denial, and the information that he did not believe iu what millions of his fellow-creatures asserted to be facts, while he indulged in a flighty discourse from one subject to another, abusing everything and everybody. A vote of thanks was proposed (but not seconded) as the people were coming out, amid the uproar that usually occurs after Mr Grant's speeches.”
