"DAILY TIMES" REPORTS.
To the Editor. Sir,— The Daly Times having entirely suppressed my speech, delivered yesterday in the Provincial Council, on the report apappearing in the columns of that journal on Thursday last, purporting to be a report of my speech—“ re Constitution of Waste Land Board”—and b ing aware that your reporter took shorthand notes of such speech, 1 shall be obliged if you will publish fame, so that the general public may know how unreliable the Dally Times' reports frequently are. I am, &c , Thomas L. Shepherd. Dunedin, May 11, 1872. [We cannot undertake to correct the mistakes o f any journal; but will comply with Mr Shepherd’s request to the extent of stating that yesterday in his place in the Provincial < 'ouncil he called attention to an alleged misreport of a speech made by him on Wednesday, during the discussion on the Land Bill. Mr Shepherd was reported to have said, in speaking to the constitution of the Waste Land Board, that “ he knew that politicians could hoodwink the people in various ways, and did it for a long time, as some people taid he had done.” Yesterday, hj * denied having used the language im; nted to him ; stating that in his remarks he referred to some members when addressing their constituents, carefully avoiding matters of serious import, and dealing with matters of minor importance ; thereby, to a certain extent, hoodwinking the electors. He had consulted with several hon. members, whose recollection of his words bore out what he said. The portion of the report be complained of was a fabrication and wholly raise.]
