General rise in stock markets; joint-stock undertakings very numerous. SHIPPING. Arrivals from > ew Zealand.—Beth Shun, Countess of Kintore, Halcyon ; Mercop ; Otago. Sailed for New Zealand.—Agamemnon, Bu’wer, Ironsides, and May Queen. Ten vessels are loading for New Zealand. COMMERCIAL. The exports for February and March show a moderate increase. To New Zealand the increase over the previous month is L 22.300. A supplement to Stables’s circular reports three more departures for New Zealand. GENERAL SUMMARY. Chaffers, an attorney, by statutory declarations published infamous details of the early life of Sir Travers and Lady Twiss. Chaffers was prosecuted for libel, and in court be tortured Lady Twiss by putting filthy questions. The libellous statements were disproved, but Lady Twiss suddenly left London, and the case collapsed. Sir Travers has since resigned his position as Queen’s Advocate.

A Washington telegram, dated April 4, says that the Foreign Committre of Congress recommended the suspension of action in re the Fishery Bills, owing to the condition of the Washington Treaty. The University boat race was rowed during a snow storm. The ship Yatala, from Adelaide, was stranded near Boulogne. The crew and passengers were, saved. The masts had to be cut away to save the ship. Bluff, May 11. The Omeo left Melbourne on the sth, after waiting twenty-four hours for the mail, which arrived before she left. She will sail for Dunedin to-night. Passengers for Dunedin, etc :—Mrs Roberts and six children and two servants; Mrs Walker, two Sisters of Charity, Mr Hall, Mr Mackey, Mr Liggins, Mr Kirkpatrick, Mr Janverin, and twelve in the steerage. Melbourne, May 4. The debate on the reply to the Governor’s address has been adjourned till the seventh! The Opposition proposed an amendment, tantamount to a rote of want of confidence, because there was an omission in the address to any reference to public education. The Ministry will probably be defeated, and will ask for dissolution, if the amendment is carried.
