DEPUTATION.

A deputation consisting of Messrs Branton, Oliver, Larnach, M'Kellar, Power, Rattray, and Swanston. and others, presented a memorial signed by twenty-eight runholders, asking for the re-appointment of Mr Atkin, as Sheep Inspector. The deputation was introduced by Mi H, Driver, who stated that a number of runholders in the south felt that, for their protection, an inspector of sheep should be appointed, and, without expressing any opinion of his own upon the subject, he trusted his Honor would allow them the opportunity of stating their object in waiting upon him. Mr Charles Swanston explained the object of the deputation. Mr Larnach said he thought the object of the deputation was to express the views of the memorialists respecting the necessity for appointing an inspector, not to have any particular individual appointed. His Honor said he had no experience as to the comparative merits of honorary and paid inspectors, but the Government, when similar applications had been made, in dined to put the construction upon them that they were intended to favor particular persons. He did not suppose it was so in this case, bub he spoke the impression of the mind of the Government with regard to similar applications. Mr Driver ; It is merely an expression of confidence in Mr Atkin, not a wish to force him upon the Government. His Honor said there was a long correspondence on the same subject, and an investigation by a committee who were supposed to represent the runholders. He was not present, and could not charge his memory as to what was arranged. He could only say that the memorial was entitled to great weight, looking at the names of those who signed it, and he would submit it to the Executive. Mr Driver : It is an ins ector we want—we do not want to force Mr Atkin on the Government. The Superinte dent : I know nothing of Mr Atkin ; but if he did hia duties satisfac torily when in office, if anyone is appointed ha is entitled to a pr Terence. The deputation thanked his Honor, and withdrew.
