ACTING ON "IMPRESSIONS."
To the Editor, Sir, —I was unfortunately unable to attend Mr Smith’s lecture on “Spiritualism,” but regret it the less as your valuable and copious report has enabled me to gather up the several points for serious cogitation. Having read the report, I slept, and—“l had a dream,” &c. I was within the precincts of the Supreme Court; the judge was on the bench ; a prisoner was in the dock ; and the foreman of the jury had just pronounced the fatal word “guilty.” The usual question was put to the prisoner as to what he had to say “ why judgment should not be passed upon him,” when the following dialogue took place ; Prisoner: May it please your Honor, I had two “impressions,” and on these two impressions I acted. My first impression was that I should never be brought to trial, and my second was, that even if I were brought to trial no jury would ever find me guilty. His Honor (having first given the preliminary sniff, and twinkle of his eyes, which always precede the utterance of something good): “Yes, and I also had two ‘impressions ’; and my first impression was that no honest jury could possibly bring in any other verdict Ilian that of ‘ guilty,’ and my second impression was, and still is, that I should sentence you to five years’ penal servitude, and such therefore is the sentence of the Court.” I awoke. Yours, &c., Pcce. Dunedin, April SO.
