CONFERENCE OF MAYORS.
The Conference met in the City Council Chambers at three o’clock this afternoon, the Mayor of Dunedin in the chair, and there were present six other members. The Chairman stated that the various statistics the Sub committee was appointed to obtain could not he completed owing to the absence from town of Mr Barr, the Government Engineer; but that efforts would
be made to get the whole of the required information. Mr Basting (Mayor of f.awrcnce) reported the result of the interview with the Government by the deputation appointed yesterday to try and induce them to withdraw the coudition respecting the maintenance of the main roads through the municipalities, which was in eftect that the Government did not see their way clear to recede from the position taken up. It should, however, be understood that till the roads re'erred to were all made and put in a thorough state of repair by the Government, no expense would fall upon the municipalities. That so soon as the Government were in funds, they would make and thoroughly repair the roads, and then the expense would be comparatively light. Mr Bastings subsequently added that the Government had stated that, should the arrangement as proposed be agreed to, they would be prepared favorably to entertain any instances of special hardship that might arise out of it. . After a sort of informal discussion of the matter, it was unanimously resolved, on the motion of the Mayor of Lawrence, seconded by the Mayor of Clyde, to accept the offer of the Government, and to urge the representatives of their several districts to support the Government in bringing into effect the proposed scheme.
