Tins Day.
A special meeting of the Council, to consider a report by the Deserves Committee, was held this morning. All the councillors were present; and Mr Mercer, in the absence of the Mayor, presided. . , . . The Committee reported that they had had under notice the proposal of Messrs Black and Thomson, to lease a portion of the
Southern Market Reserve ; and that after careful re-consideration of the subjects in al' its aspects, they recommended that that portion of the reserve situate north of the creek which passes through the land leased, (subject to the concurrence of the Superintendent,) to Messrs Black and Thomson, for seven years, at a yearly rental of L‘2oo; no valuation to be allowed at the end of the term. The committee further reported they had considered the several sections of the Dunedin Reserves Management Ordinance, 18(57, hearing on the reserve in question, and were decidedly of opinion that the Council Avon Id be carrying into effect the in tentionof th<VLegislature insetting aside the reserve, by temporarily utilising a portion in order to obtain funds Avich which hereafter it might build a substantial market place. 'I he adoption of the report Avas carried on the understanding that the moneys accruing from the lease would be placed to the credit of a market account, Avith a view to the ultimate erection of substantial buildings on the reserve. Mr Cargill’s resignation was accepted; nominations for the vacancy to be made on Saturday next, and the election to take place on the Thursday folloAving. Polling booth, old Police Barracks ; Mr J. B. M'Culloch to preside.
