EDUCATION BOARD.

The Education Board met at noon to-day at the Superintendent’s offices. Present — His Honor the Superintendent, Messrs Bathgate, Bradshaw and Eeid. A deputation from Highcliffe School Committe asked aid towards the enlargement of the schoolmaster’s residence, on condition of the school district contributing one-third of the expense. It was agreed to give aid to the extent of L2O on tfie conditions proposed. A deputation from the School Committee of Waihola, asked the Board to continue the school a main school. It was resolved that it was inexpedient to depart from the regu lations adopted at the last meeting. _ An application from the Kaikorai School Committee was referred to the Inspector to examine into and report upon. The application respecting the school buildings was referred to the Executive. A complaint from the Green Island School Committee was remitted to Mr Sperry, the Secretary to the Education Board, to enquire into and report. As regards the complaint generally, the Board resolved that any charge against the schoolmaster with a view to his removal must be specific. The Inspector reported that the following persons had undergone examination for employment as teachers, and had successfully passed : Second Class David Fleming, Oamaru. Fourth Class—David White, Dunedin ; Marian A. Hookham, Oamaru ; D. G. Fraser, Dunedin; George Stevens, Kaitangata. The Inspector’s report was approved, and Archibald Hislop, pupil teacher at East Taieri, was authorised to hold office as a side school teacher. Various claims for repairs were passed. The application from the Otepopo School Committee, for an additional olass-room, was referred to the Executive. The proposed reduction of fees by the Papakaio School Committee, was agreed to. Communications from the Riverton and Groper’s Bush Committees were referred to the Inspector for report, as was also a memorial asking the removal of the West Taieri School to Uutram. The Board resolved to adhere to its former resolution in regard to the appointment of Mrs Robinson to Awamoko School. In reply to a memorial, the Board agreed to sanction the establishment of a subsidised school at Kychurn Diggings, at a schoolmaster’s salary of LOO a year. On the application of the Otago Schoolmasters’ Association, it was resolved that a representative from the Association be appointed a member of the Board of Examiners for Provincial Scholarships and of candidates for the office of teacher. The application of the Schoolmasters’Association to be permitted to peruse the papers of the successful candidates for Provincial Scholarships was declined by the Board. On the memorial for the establishment of a North School at Oamaru, it was agreed that a side school he established ; the teacher’s salary to be L 75 per annum. The agreement to make a reserve was favorably entertained, and referred to the Government. The application for a new sehoolhouse at Popotunoa was referred to the Government. Several matters connected with leasing the Education Reserves were disposed of. Two emigrants to one immigrant is the ratio in Virginia.
