SATURDAY HALF-HOLIDAY ASSOCIATION.
To the Editor.
Sir, —As I was pleased to see the halfho’iday so generally observed last Satu; day and wisb the movement every success, I beg to give the public the same advice which the Kev. Dr Guthrie gave the people of Edinburgh when the early closing movement was started there. He said, when mention was made of two or three refractory ones standing in the way of its adoption—that they were all beating about the bush : “Itis in your own hands, ladies and gentlemen, 'to make it a success, by just making your minds up not to darken the doors of any shop in any day of the week that opposed the scheme.” The advice was received with tremendous cheers, and had the desired effect. Let the people of Dunedin make up their minds to do the same, and the few who keep open will soon find it to their interest to close; and those who shut will have the satisfaction of knowing that those who persist in keeping open will lose more during the week than they will ever make up by keeping open on Saturdays. The public will support them in taking active steps to gain the day. What’s worth having is worth fighting for. Let them be plucky, A Well-wisher. Dunedin, 10th April.
