THE PUBLIC ACCOUNTS.

[From the Wellington ladep ndent, March 7.) From the Gazette of Tuesday, March 5, we take the following summary of the receipts and expenditure of the public accounts of the colony for the quarter ended the doth September, 1871. The receipts, with the Consolidated Fund, amounted for the quarter to L 232.398, which, with the addition of L 13.417 outstanding in the shape of imprests unaccounted for, and 1,70,071 balances in hand at commencement of the quarter, makes a total debit of L 315,886. Jhe expenditure under the same head was r 19 <,557 during the quarter, leaving balances in hand amounting to L 59.221, and outstanding imprests of L 58.105. Under the head of Special Fund, the receipts during the quarter were L 380.036, which with a balance in band at the commencement of the quarter of L 12,495, and imprests unaccounted for, made a total of L 416,394. The expenditure on this branch of account was L 245.747 ; imprests unaccounted for amounted to L 162.951, and L76G5 remained in hand at the end of the quarter. On the public works account the receipts were 1,834,312, to which must be added L 4504 of balance in hand from last quarter, and L 8938 represented by unaccounted imprests. The expenditure on this branch was L 197.870; inprests unaccounted for amounted to L 649.731. and a balance of L 152 was left in hand at the end of the quarter. Under the head of land fund the receipts were L8T,890, and a balance from the preceding quarter of L 1837, but frqm that had to be deducted a credit on the unaccounted imprests of L 1789, making the total L 87.939. The expenditure on the land fund account was L 89,724, a balance of L 4097 was in hand at the end of the quarter, and credit imprests to the extent of L 5883 remained outstanding. Under the head Trust Fund the receipts amounted to L 40.289, to which has to be added a balance in hand at beginning of the quarter of L 63.963, and deducting a credit item of imprest unaccounted for of L 29, made the total L 104.223. The expenditure was L 28.641, a balance of L 87,730 remained on hand at the end of the term, and credit imprests not accounted for had been issued amounting to 1,12,147. The total actual receipts from all sources for the quarter amounted to LI, 574,926, and the actual expenditure during' the same period to - The imprests unaccounted for were on the following .accounts Imperial Government, L22oj Provinces in separate wcouut, I<Bo7B j Bay of Islands Settlement

Act account, L 8440 ; Auckland Reserves Act account, L 211 0; Paymaster-General, L 32.746 ; miscellaneous advances, L 82,205 ; and 1720,000 in deposit at Rank of .New Zealand, London, on account of the loan agents.
