The s s Gothenburgh from Melbourne via the Bluff, arrived this morning. Her passengers, cargo, -and mails, were shortly after arrival conveyed to Dunedin by the Harbor steamers. The s.s. Storm Bird from the Bluff arrived this forenoon, anchored at the Port, and at noon proceeded to Dunedin. The s.s. Rangitira, from Lyttelton arrived at 1 p.m. this afternoon. The p.s. Wallace, for Oamaru, sailed this forenoon. The passengers and luggage, per ship Margaret Galbraith, were this morning conveyed to Dunedin by the Golden Age on her 9 a.m. trip. The race between the Wellington and the big steamer, has terminated in favour of the latter. Both vessels left Wellington together ; the Nebraska arriving in Lyttelton harbor at 6 o’clock this morning, the Wellington three hours later. Some few months ago, Capt. Thomson, Harbor Master at the Bluff, proceeded to Melbourne, in order to take out a patent for his improvements in the construction of anchors. By the latest Melbourne papers to hand we observe that the necessary process has been completed. We may add that Capt. Thomson was offered a good round sum in Melbourne for his invention, but he has decided to visit the old country (having obtained leave of absence for that purpose), iu order to test its value there. He leaves by the Rangitoto, and we heartily hope that he will receive a substantial reward for his undoubted ingenuity and patient perseverance. Captain J, B. Greig. formerly Harbour Master under the Southland Government, is now acting as Capt. Thomson’s locum tenens. — Southland Times. BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAEH. ARRIVED.
