Storm Bird for Invercargill, March 9 Wallace for Oamaru, March 8 Warrior Queen for London, March 13 The report of a square-rigged vessel being Seen off the Ocean Beadh having reached the Port this forenoon, the Geelong at once proceeded outside in quest of the tow. At two O’clock she put in an appearance towing in the Margaret Galbraith, from Glasgow, and brought her up to her anchorage at half-past three. . . The s.s, Maori, from Lyttelton Via inter; mediate ports of call, arrived at 9 a.m. to-day. Captain Malcolm reports leaving Timaru at 9.30 last evening; sighted the American barque Polly Lewis, from Boston via Melbourne, with part original cargo, at 6 a.m. this morning; took the barque in tow, and steamed to the Heads, when the steam-tug Geelong hove in sight, and completed the towage by bringing the barque to a convenient discharging berth. Messrs Kum Lee and Co. inform us that the Lady Turner is] not loading at Hong Kong for this port, so she will not be laid on for China, as advertised. The Northumberland, s.s., which has made her maiden trip to Melbourne in 55 days, is of 1898 tons, with engines of 300 horse power nominal. Her dimensions are —length between perpendiculars, 270 feet; extreme breadth, 38 feet ; depth of hold, 26 feet. Her engines arc constructed upon an improved double cylinder principle and work •with a very small consumption of coal. She is commanded by Captain Skinner, late of the Lincolnshire.
The Kangitoto, Captain Hugh Maekie, With the New Zealand portion of the English mail, via Suez, left Hobson’s Bay at 4.30 p.m. on the 21st ult., and cleared Port Phillip Heads at 8 o’clock ; passed Wilson’s Promontory at 7 a. m. next day, and arrived off Hokitika at midnight on the 27th; transhipped mails, passengers, and 70 tons of cargo into the steam tender Waipara, and left at 9 a.m., on the 28th, and arrived off the Grey at 10.45 a.m. ; was tendered by the p.s. Despatch at noon, and left at 1 p.m. for Nelson, arriving off the Boulder Bank at 9.30 a.m. on the 29th ; left Nelson at 12 o’clock on the Ist and arrived in Wellington harbour at 8 p.m. Experienced light variable winds and fine weather throughout the passage from Melbourne. Left Wellington at noon on the 3rd and arrived in Lyttelton at 6 a.m. on the 4th ; left the same evening, and arrived at Port Chalmers early this morning.
