PRESENTATION to THE MAYOR.
Mr Fish was to-day presented, in the presence of a large number of the citizens, who assembled m the Council Chamber to witness the proceedings, with a pair of very handsome silver vases, and a silver salver and card case, the gift of a number of gas consumers in Dunedin, in recognition of his efforts to obtain a cheap supply of gas. The articles were manufactured by Mr Hislop, and bore this inscriptionPx-e----sented by a number of Gas Consumers to Henry omith Fish, jun., Esq , Mayor of Dunedin, as a recognition of his services in connection with the public agitation for the reduction iu the price of gas, which was commenced by him in 1860, and was successfully terminated in Feb. 1872. Dunedin, 2ml March, 1872.” The presentation was made by Mr Nixon, of the Criterion Hot.l, who said that the subscribers had no wish to underrate t e Councillors’ services in the cause of cheap gas. The May r made a very lengthy reply, in which bo reviewed his action and that of the Council i>n the gas question, but as lie spoKe until a very late hour, we must hold hia speech over till Monday.
