SATURDAY HALF-HOLIDAY ASSOCIATION.

To the Editor, Sir,—l am immensely pleased at seeing such an interest taken in this half holiday movement. It seems so rational that men and women should be allowed opportunities of enjoying healthful exercise, that I would fain hope no shopkeeper will be found so heartlessly selfish as to put anything in the wav of making this movement a decided success, Let the Association extend their operations to as many trades as possible, because all equally require fresh air and exorcise; and the curious thing about it is, that we can do a good turn to our assistants, get the benefit ourselves, and save money besides, by closing at one o’clock on Saturday, jt was lucky the bargain was struck with Mr Laruach, as I believe the gas company will be the only sufferer; but even he will not grudge the loss when it confers such a great boon. . Let the Association invite all businesses to co-operate, because the more general it is the more likely it is to be permanent; though I believe when once the shopkeepers feel that they are no losers by it, they will be heartily thankful to their assistants for making such praiseworthy efforts to reduce the hours of labor. Public sympathy is with them, and may they succeed is the earnest wish of Yours, &c., A Shopkeeper. Dunedin, February 29.
