This Day. (Before his Worship the Mayor.) DRUNKENNESS. David J. Thompson was ffned fis ; the notorious Mary Jarrey, 40s, or fourteen days’ imprisonment. Alonzo Qrennan was fined 40s, or three days’ imprisonment. INDECENCY. An old man, named James Clifford, was sentenced to twenty-four hours’ hard labor for this offence. FURIOUS DRIVING. Alonzo Grennan was charged with this offence. On the case being called on, the Commissioner of Police said that being a very gross case, he intended going fully into it, but his Worship intimated that he was fully satisfied with the evidence produced on the last occasion. The defendant made an explanation to the effect that the horse he was driving on the day in question had a very tender month : that it required to be severely beat to get it to go; and that it was in the habit of travelling from one side of the street to the other. A woman (stated by the police to be a notorious character, named Mowbray), who was in the express at the time attempted to seize hold of the reins, which startled the horse ; hence the collision. It was out of his (Grennan’s) power to prevent it. His Worship thought the evidence clearly proved on& of tfye gropest cases of carelessness and wilfiil furious driving thaf had over come under his notice. It was not the first time the defendant had been before the Court for improper behavior. He regarded him as a violent and careless sort of man ; and cautioned him against repeating these acts, which would get him into serious trouble if continued. He was satisfied from the evidence that the defendant’s version of the affair was not correct j and would mark his sense of his conduct by inflicting the heaviest penalty allowed by law—viz., L 5 and costs. OFFENCES AGAINST THE BYE-LAWS. R. Fagan, for allowing the company’s water to run to waste, was fined 2s 6d ; John Bowie Wallace M’Qnaid, and Frederick Hill, 2» 6d and costs each, for driving round street corners at ether thgfl a walking pace; Thomas Winstanley, allowing impure'matter to flow on to Maclaggan street, and George Leslie, allowing horses to wander, 10s and costs each.
