THE VOLUNTEERS.
The firing in the first stage of the Dunedin Corps for the choice of representatives, took place at the Anderson’s Bay Raoge this morning. Captain Copeland, North Dunedin Rifles, was the officer in charge; There were twenty-eight competitors. The following are the scores :
Ifc wi.l thus be seen that twenty out < f the twenty-eight men are qualified to fire in the second stage. Colonel Cargill, commanding the district, Jwas present daring the firing.
The Canterbury cavalry fired for representatives at the co'onial shooting on the 26 tb. The condition, requiring 45 points to le made at ranges of 150, 200, and 250yarda to qualify, remarks the Times, was a seriois one, considering the circumstances under which the men competed ; besides, the carbines the men used were not long enough in their possession to permit of their becoming thoroughly used to them, aud added to this there was a strong N.E breeze during tie whole of the competition. Five men competed ; the successful ones being Troopers Cohn and Judge. The former’s score of 52 out of a possible 60 (a succession of bulls-ejes being made at the first range, and 17 points at the second), is under the circumstances a commendable performance ; while Trooper Judge’s 49 is four points above an average of centres. From the fact that the men are proved marksmen, and that the only volunteer in Auckland, who, qualified as a representative, made 47 points. The Times concludes that Canterbury has a good chance of securing some of the good things at the Colonial meeting.
It will be remembered that in the recent match between the Scottish Company and the Greymouth Rifles, the later ran their opponents very close. It has often been remarked that the Greymouth Rifles have been very successful in their matches: the explanation is that the range at which they fire is a complete cul de sac blocked out of dense bush, and is for rifle-shooting purposes as free from the effects of wind or sun as a rifle gallery, which in reality it is.
