MAYOR’S COURT.
This Day, (Before His Worship the Mayor.) OBSCENE LANGUAGE. John Wilks and Mary Ann Sutton having pleaded guilty to this offence, were each fined LlO, or three months’ imprisonment. The fines were immediately paid. robbery from the person. Kate M‘Donald, remanded from yesterday on a charge of stealing a watch and chain, was again brought up. Sergeant Coneys stated that shortly after he received information of the robbery on the evening of the 17th he went to the prisoners bouse and insti tuted a search which was unsuccessful. He nailed up the Avindows and secured the door, and this morning returned to the house. In searching the cupboard he noticed a cloth, before Avhich a box containing carpenter’s tools had been placed ; and on shaking the cloth there dropped out the watch and chain produced, which were identified by the prosecutor. His Worship pointed out to the prisoner if she pleaded guilty he would be able to deal summarily with the case ; if not, she would have to stay in gaol for three months awaiting trial. Prisoner : I can’t plead guilty, as I do not know Avhether I would be telling a lie or not by so doing, because I know nothing about it. I Avas drunk at the time, and never saw the watch or chain. The prisoner was then committed for trial. OFFENCES AGAINST THE BYE LAAVS. Robert Roberts was fined 10s and costa for driving a dray without the owner’s name being painted on it. MINOR OFFENCE. John Buckley was fined 20s and costs, and ordered to pay the amount of the damage (LI) for breaking a door in the house of Catherine Elliott. The case of Elliott v. Buckley, for threatening language, was adjourned.
