Colonial Prize Firing.—The representatives for the Tokomairiro district are Sergeant Adam, Sergeant Scott, Privates Nutsford and Murray. Gas.— A deputation, headed by Mr Julius Hyman, waited on the City Councillors for High Ward, Messrs Keith .Ramsay and Mercer, with a memorial, numerously signed by ratepayers in High Ward, expressing a hope that they would by then votes and influence uphold the principle of the Corporation having its own gas works, and of reducing the city rates through the profits therefrom. Funeral, —The remains of Mr Peter Scrymgeour, who was drowned by the upsetting of a boat in the harbor pu Christmas Day, were interred in the Southeys .Cemetery to-day. The funeral started from Fire brigade Station a little after three p.m., the bell tolling every minute. First there was the hearse, the pall-bearers being six members of the Hook and Ladder Carriage Company, of t)m deceased was a member, then the relatives, the Fire
Brigade, the members of the Battalion Band, and the private friends of the deceased. The Rev. Mr Stuart officiated at the grave. Gas Company.— The annual meeting of the company was to have been held yesterday, but lapsed for want of a quorum. From the balance prepared by the Secretary (Mr Willoughby), that the revenue from rent and interest on arrears of rent for the year 1871, amounted to L 7621 13s 4d, and the expenditure to L 2391 I6s, leaving a balance of Lii 229 17s 4d available, loss depending liabilities (L2OO and unascertained cost of sale of works) tor distribution on 3000 paid-up shares constituting the company’s capital. Lyttelton Regatta. —Speaking of the Yacht Race at this Regatta, the Times states that it was generally expected that the Annie Ogle would win the first prize of L2O. At the outset there was some talk of disqualifying the Ogle, but the committee justly decided that after inducing the owner to enfc r into competition, this would be unfair, and they therefore selected the better alternative of increasing the secoudjerize to LlO, and giving a tiling prize of L 5, to encourage outsiders Th e.'Miium congratulates Mr Gibbs, who sailed the Torment, of Dunedin, the winner of the second prize, for his 1 spirit in coming up to compete, and hopes the example will be followed on future occasions.
Attemted Suicide. —Last evening, between ten and eleven o’clock, Mr Smith, clerk to Mr Menlove, butcher, George-street, discovered a woman of the town, named Isabella Tassey, laying in a dying state at the back of the butchery. A constable was sent for, and on his arrival he searched the yard aud found a bottle containing laudanum. The woman was taken to the Hospital, and Dr Yates administered strong emetics to her, and this morning she was sufficiently recovered to allow of her being taken before the Mayor’s Court. She there stated that she had no intention of destroying herself, and that she was in the habit of taking laudanum. The bottle contained an ounce which she had obtained yesterday afternoon from Mr Bagley’s, George street. She was remanded till Saturday. Fatal Accident at Tokomairiro. A coroner’s inquest was held at Milton on Wednesday, upon the body of the late Joseph Hewsou, who was killed on Saturday afternoOn last while driving his springcart for the conveyance of ;crated water on a return trip from Manuka Flat. The evidence showed that deceased at the time was under the inlliience of liquor, and unable to control the horse, which he drove at a furious pace through the intricate windings of the road, and on reaching the first bridge the off wheel struck the guard stone, which upset the machine. Deceased appeared to have lain on the road insensible for fully half an hour, until found by a passing waggoner, and conveyed by coach to the Manuka Flat Hotel, where he lay insensible for nearly twenty-four hours, aud never recovered consciousness up to tho time of his death on Sunday evening. Tho post-mortem examination made by Dr Weber, who attended the defeased shortly before he expired, showed that death had resulted from concussion of the brain, caused by the fall, with the rupture of a blood-vessel in the brain; and a verdict of “Accidental death,” in accordance with the medical testimony, was returned by the jury.
A.L0.0.F, —The elective officers of the Loyal Alexandra Lodge, A. I. 0.0. F., were duly installed last evening for the ensuing six months at the Old Masonic Hall, in the presence of a large number of the brethren. The ceremony was conducted by E.W.D.G. Master Bro. London, assisted by R.W.G. Secretary Bro. Michie and W.G. Marshall Bro. Neale. The following officers were installed :—Bro. Richard T. Wheeler, J.P.G.; Bro. Chas. J. H. Robertson, N.G.; Bro. Frederick Hmnffray, V.G.; Bro. J. A. M‘Kay> Secretary; Bro. Joseph Braithwaite, Treasurer ; Bros. J. Wain and Reid, Trustees. The newly installed N.G. aud A .G. then appointed theit subordinate officers for the te'm, as follows Bros. Dobbie and Alexander Grant, Right and Left Supporters to N.G.; Bro. R. Mercer, Conductor; Bro. Hogg, Warden; Bro. Druinm, R.S. to V. G,; Bro. Frank Coxhead, L. S. S.; Bro. Holmes, 1.G.; and Bro. Oils, O.G. The R. W.G. Master briefly addressed the brethren, complimenting them on thejr selec tion of officers, and admonished them all to energetically assist each other in promoting the Lodge and the Order. Grand officers Michie and Neale also offered a few well - chosen remarks, and wished the Lodge every prosperity, Bros,. Robertson, Humffrcy, and Braithwaite briefly returned thanks for the responsible positions they had been placed in, and hoped, with the co-operation of the members, to carry out with efficiency the duties they had taken upon themselves. The members of the Sous of Temperance, Antidote Division, will meet in the Division Room, Moray Place, on Friday, sth hist., at 7.30 p.m. A lecture on behalf of the Dunedin Band of Hope will be delivered by the Rev. Dr Copland, in the Wesl’eyan Hall, Stuartstreet, on Friday evening, at 7 o'plock. The committee of the Otago Benevolent Institution acknowledge by advertisement the receipt of a further donation of L2O from Messrs A. and T. Tnglis. Of itself this -woqld ho a handsome donation, but its value is enhanced by the fact that it is the second gift to the same amount, making L4O contributed by this firm within a short time.
