WHOLESALE POISONING CASE A most extraordinary case of wholesale poisoning, says the Home News, is under investigation by the Brighton magistrates. According to the statements published, an attempt has been made to poison several psrsons by sending them presents of eatables. The chief constable of Brighton a short time since offered a reward of L2O for the discovery of the sender of the parcels. Some of these were conveyed by post, and others by rail. On being opened they were found to contain cakes, sweetmeats, and fruits, and in some cases a cake was wrapped up separately, and specially addressed to the mistress of the house. In most cases the cakes were found to contain poison. Suspicion having been fixed on a lady named Edwards, unmarried, about thirty-five years of age, she was arrested and brought before the borough magistrates charged with having attempted to poison hjrs Emily Beard, the w fe of Dr Beard, a physician practising in Brighton. The accused had been several times examined, and on the 31st of August five distinct charges of attempting to poison were preferred against her. She has been committed for trial. Deceased was for some years connected with the press in Auckland, Dunedin, and Hokitika, His widow resides in Greymouth, A few months ago, a boy in Wilmington, N.C,, sent a letter to tl c Emperor Napoleon, telling him that he was but a boy of eleven years, but that with the heart of a man he sympathised with him in the heavy misfortunes that had befallen upon him. A few days since, to the astonishment of every one, an autograph letter was received from the Emperor in reply. It thanked him for the kindly and generous symprthy that had been bestowed, and hoped that the lot in life o'f his little friend would fall in more quiet scenes and more peaceful times than had fallen to the share of the Emperor of the French, farglassification.
