ARRIVED. Oamaru —Dec. 15th, 8 a.m., Beautiful Star, from Dunedin. Oamaru—Deo. loth, 11.20 a.m., Maori, from Dunedin. The p.s. Wallace arrived last evening from Oamaru, and sailed this forenoon for the sune destination, with passengers and c vrgo. The s.s. Pretty Jane arrived from Invercargill with passengers and cargo, at 3 a m. this morning. The s.s. Beautiful Star sailed last night, at with passengers and a large general cargo, for Lyttelton and intermediate ports. The barque Glencoe, for Hobart Town, was this morning towed from Dunedin to sea by the p.s. Geelong. The time occupied in towing from Dunedin to the Heads is said to have been only one hour forty-five minutes. The schooner Result, from Waikouaiti, arrived at the Heads this morning, and beat up to the Port with the afternoon’s flood. We ( Lyttelton Times) regret to state that little hopes can be now entertained of the safety of the schooner Rifleman. The schooner left our harbor on the 10th ult., bound for Havelock for a cargo of timber On the evening of the 10th there was a terrific gale on the coast, and the schooner was seen by the captain of the s.s. Ahuriri flying before it. Captain Kennedy, of the s.s. Wellington, states that ho had not experienced such a gale for many years ; it amounted to a cyclone in force, all his sails being blown away. The s.s. Maori, which was on her passage north, had to run for shelter. It was considered by some that the vessel had got dismasted, and that the captain had run into some bay. Captain Gibson telegraphed to the Government, asking them to send the p.s, Luna in search, and the result has been that a thorough search has been made. The steamer returned on Friday night, and the following telegrams were received by Captain Gibson : south side of Straits close to shore from Capo Campbell to Blind Bay, including Rangitoto Roads, Port Hardy, and Greville harbour; found no traces of Rifleman.— Signed W. Seed, Secretary Customs.” “I am afraid there is no hope of finding any trace of the Rifleman. We have searched the south side of the Straits well. 1 believe she has turned over and sunk in the sea.— John Fairchild, master p.s. Lnna.” Captain P. Toomey was one of our best coasting CAptaius t and his loss will be deeply regretted by all who knew him. Mr Anderson, who formerly had command of the Spray, was mate of the vessel. Both officers leave wives and families to mourn their loss.
