DUNEDIN SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS.
MIDDLE DISTRICT SCHOOL. The annual examinations of the pupils attending this school was commenced on Tuesday, continued the day following, and brought to a close with the usual distribution of prizes to-day. Tlic examiners were the Revs. A. Reid and T. Roseby. Before proceeding to report to-day’s proceedings, it may be interesting to state the attendance at school has largely increased during the year ; apd it has been found necessary to increase the aoqoraodatipn by the erection of a large building at the side of the main school; and in it some of the younger classes w ill be located in future. The total number of pupils is 587 ; and the teaching power is thus distributed :—Mr Ferguson, tho second master, has charge of the Advanced Reader, White’s British History and Smith’s Roman History classes, in which there are 21 girls and 36 boys; Mias Stevens, the assistant female teacher, has an Advanced Hoad r. and British History class comprising 38 girls and 39 boys ; Mr bind say, the third master, has the Progressive Lessons and a History class of 69 boys; Mias Jane Hill, pupil teacher, a Progressive Lesson and History class of 68 girls ; Miss Fisher, pupil teacher, tho Senior Progressive Lesson class of 48 boys j Miss Gordon, pupil teacher, the *
Junior Progressive (esson class of 21 girls and 23 boys; Miss Joanna Hill, pupil teacher, the Sixth Hook class of 22 girls and 24 hoys; Miss Halliwell, pupil teacher, the Filth Book class of 21 girls and 27 boys ; and Miss Hay, assisted by three amateur teachers, the remainder of the lower classes, Mr Halliwell, the headmaster, supervising the teaching of the entire school.
The examiners, in concluding their labors, sent in reports of the >tate of each class. >)f Mr I indsay’s. Mr oseby says : I examined this class to day, and would brielly 'Ummarise the results as follow : The reading was fair ; the knowledge of the subject (the prairies of North America) good; the dictation exercise satisfactory; knowledge of grammar moderate ; knowledge of geography excellent. All the questions in history (of England) were well answered. The writing of the children tolerably good. The most satisfactory, or perhaps I should say (since the whole examination was satisfactory) the most pleasing, part of the afternoon’s exercise was the arithmetic, in which, with few exceptions, all the scholars seemed to be pretty well up, and some exhibited quite unusual accuracy, quickness, and ingenuity. I cannot forbear stating —in closing my review of the day’s work in examining two classes this morning, and the above class this afternoon - - that I was much pleased with the disciplinary firmness, the tact, gentleness, and kindness of manner towards the children, and manifest abilities of the two ladies and gentlemen having severally the charge of their c'asses.” Mr Boseby says of MissHill’s c’ass: “ I examined this class of girls this morning and can only express my unmingled satisfaction and delight with the sharpness, accuracy, and minuteness of knowledge exhibited by the children. The geography was all but faultless, the grammar fair, the arithmetic (in which the examination was somewhat brief for lack of time) seemed creditable. The dictation good, very good. The reading was b autiful; it was a pleasure to hear passages read with a distinctness, justice of emphasis, regard to punctuation, and even expressiveness, which would have done credit to an adult. The discipline of this class offers no point for criticism. ’—And of Miss Fisher’s class, “ I had the pleasure of examining this class of boys this morning. The discipline is, I think, to be highly con:«mended. The degree of proficiency is of course to be estimated with due regard to ages of the children and the term during which they have been at school. As a casual visiter I would be disposed to pronounce it very creditable. The writing was on the whole fair, the grammar satisfactory, the geography excellent. The reading (with which I think no other part of junior school teaching can be compared for importance) was, having perhaps a little of the Scotch accent, good. Mr Reid reports of Miss Stevens’ class ; “ The examination which I had the pleasure of witnessing this morning gave evidence of great painstaking and thoroughness in teaching, and was exceedingly creditable both to teacher and taught. In English history (reign of Elizabeth), the knowledge of the pupils was at once accurate and copious; reading (simultaneous and individual) was given distinctly and with due regard to emphasis ; arithmetic was: characterised by surprising expedition, and very general correctness ; in grammar the scholars seemed perfectly at home ; nor were they less so in geography of New Zealand; discipline was perfect, and altogether the examination was a treat most enjoyable.” P.S.—.Several really beautiful specimens of mapping, the work of the scholars, were exhibited, and the penmanship, as shown by the copy books
yvag yery fair.” The presentation of prices made by the Revs T. Roseby and A. Reid to-day In the presence of a large number of the children’s parents and friends. The walls of the room in which the presentation took place were hung with specimens of writing and mapping, and in some other rooms some line specimens of sewing, etc., were shown.
