To-day’s Holiday.— The morning broke with a very threatening sky, which gave the dearest indication of the heavy rainfall which fell a’ out eight o’clock and continued at intervals till nearly noon. It almost put a stop to out-door amusement*. The state of the ground was so unfavorable that the Fire Brigade wisely determined to, put off their pic-nip to another holiday, but ft was determined to go on with the other sports, an improvement having taken place about one o’clock. The remainder of the day was really fine. The volunteer parade in the morning was poorly attended from tho cause above mentioned, but all tbe companies were represented, and after performing a few mameuvres the men were dismissed. The weather being unfavourable for excursions by steamer the Wallace did not start, b.it steamed to the port to receive cargo from the ship May Queey. The .Sampson, hpv/evw, started, and was patronised by about 40 passengers from Dunedin, which number was supplemented at Fort Chalmers. Tho w. atber in the afternoon be ng more favourable for the trip to the heads, the Sampson proceeded there.—Owing to the late hour at which the Athletic Sports commenced, we are only able to give the bare results to-day. 100 yards flat race—Brewer, 1 ; A. E. Cairns, 2 Standing high leap— Pell, 1. Grand open handicap, first event — Anld (who received 25 yards start), 1; Fox, j>. Milo race—A. E. Tainc, 1 ; A. I\. Smith, 2. Mile walking match—J. Fulton, 1. It. H Browne came in first, but was disqualified for jostling; Bowden was awarded second place. Punning leap—P. Muir was the only competitor. HO yards race— Beid, 1; Norman, 3.
100 yards champion flat race—A. E. Cairns, 1. Second event, grand open handicap— Westland. 1 ; F. Muir, 2. Funning high leap— Pell was the only competitor. Quarts r-inilo champion flat race—A. F. Taine, I ; F. K. Smith, 2. This was a capitallycontested race, Smith ami Taine running almost neck and neck during the whole of the last lap. Taine won by about four yards. Two mile walking match —Macgregor won easily ; Bowden was awarded second place, Sievwright being disqualified for improper walking. The hurdle ra. e was well won by F. Muir. There were about 1200 persons present. We will give an account of the yacht races to-morrow.
