THE MEETING AT THE MASONIC HALL.
To the Editor, Sir,— lt is rumored in Dunedin that Mr John Bathgate sent a telegram from Wellington to his Worship the Mayor of Dunedin, requesting him, in strong terms, to convene a meeting of the citizens for the purpose of agitating against the Brogdeu contracts. This was done in accordance with his wishes. Under these circumstances would it be out of place if Mr John Bathgate was asked to explain, for the benefit of his constituents, the reason, he, in his place in the House of Representatives, so strongly supported and so favorably reviewed the Brogden contracts, and voted with the Ministry in everything connected with those gentlemen? His explanation may be the means of elucidating some of the really good points in the contracts {of which, no doubt there are many), and a.'so satisfy' some of his late supporters as to his sudden change opinion.—Yours truly, Voter, Dunedin, 25 th Nov., 1871.
