Beautiful Star arrived last night at 11, from Lyttelton and intermediate ports, with passengers and cargo. The s,s. Maori arrived at 7.30 this morning, with passengers and cargo from Northern Ports. The barque Hydra, for Newcastle, and the brig Venus, for Lyttelton, with part original cargo of sugars, were towed to sea th s forenoon by the steam tug Geelong. The s.s. Phmbe, with the English mails via San Francisco, sailed for Northern Ports at 1 p.m. to-day. Mr J. W. Walker, the champion in the late rifle contest, proceeded North with the Phoebe to-day. The local paper notices the death of Mr Stephen Roff, who died at his house in Amey street, Greymoutb. Mr Roff had been a resident of the Grey for years, and had recently, with two others, patented an apparatus, bi Melbourne, for telling the weight of the contents of any ship or vessel while in the wi 'ter. The Government had recently grantee. 1 the patent, and Mr Roff’s share in it is estimated to be worth L2OOO to L3OOO. He v, Tas a native of New York States, was only '6 years of age, and possessed considerable engineering ability and skill.
