New Municipality. Palmerston lias been created a municipality. The Rifle Match. —In reference to the match between Mr Walker, of Auckland, and Mr Christie, of this Province, we arc informed that it is decided to come off on Monday aud Tuesday next, at the Forbury Park, the use of the ground having been granted for. that purpose. Fatal Accidents.—We learn from a local paper that an accident occurred between the Kakanui river and the Island stream on Friday last. Several men were returning from the Oamaru Agricultural Show to Mr Craig’s in a dray, and when between the river and the stream the horse bolted, and in crossing a gutter capsized the dray. One man had his ribs broken, another his arms broken, and a third received such severe injuries that he died two days afterwards.—At Bighill, near Lawrence, on the Bth inst, a miner named John Burns lost his life by a dray accident. The horses he was driving bolted, and in attempting to put on the break, he fell onto the road, one of the wheels of the dray passing ove him. He was a native of Dublin and 82 years of ago. Agricultural Show. —The eighth annual show of the Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held at Oamaru on the 10th inst. The Times says the show, under all the circumstances, may be deemed a success. The horse stock was splendid, surpassing, for number and quality (especially the draught), anything hitherto seen in the district, and, according to the opinion of the visitors, ever exhibited at any show in the Province. The number of cattle entered was hardly as numerous as on the previous year, but the quality of the animals, particularly the short-horns, was exceedingly

fine aud much admired. The sheep, also, were deficient (n numbers —the competitions for long-woolled being Confined almost exclusively to the Hon. M. Holmes and the New Zealand and Australian Land Company, who divided the prizes, with the exception of Romney Marsh, the silver medal for the best 3 rams having been awarded to Messrs Webster and Aitken. In Merino sheep, the Hon. M. Holmes aud Messrs Borton and M ‘Master were the only prize-takers. The show of pigs was limited, but the quality we think sup. rior to anything yet seen in the district. Dairy produce was well represented, and the exhibits showed that strict attention was now being paid to this branch of farm industry, in this class were some tins of pr..served meats, comprising beef, mutton, and tongues, which were pronounced by the judges to be of excellent flavor and condition. The meats were manufactured by Messrs Lees and Moore. The show of implements were not largo, hut sufficient to show that the local manufacturers have not retrograded during the year. Messrs Reid and Cray, and J. Ogiivie, exhibited single and double furrow ploughs, reaping machines, and other agricultural implements ; aud Mr D. Henderson received a silver medal as a prize for the best horse-cart for farm purposes. There were also samples of rope made from New Zealand flax by Mr C. G. Moore, of excellent quality ; and a sample of Mr Kinncar’a soft soap—an article recently brought into the market as especially adapted for wool-scouring purposes. Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather, there could not have been during the clay less than between 700 and 800 visitors. A concert will be given in the Masonic Hall to-morrow evening, when a capital programme of vocal and instrumou- . tal music will be put forward. The object in view is a very charitable one, and as such ought to command public support.
