A fire occurred in San Francisco on Sept. 23, and destroyed the wholesale stores of Redding!on, Haatles and Co., and another in Harpendiary’s block. The total loss is nearly a million dollars. A tire in Chicago on October 7, burnt over seven blocks of buildings. The loss was 500,000 dols. On October 8, a second fire at Chicago destroyed 10,000 buildings ; the loss being 150,000,000 dols. All the business part of the city was destroyed ; 100,000 people being rendered homeless. Fires in the forest of North Michigan, Wisconsin, and lowa, destroyed a million dollars worth of property. Many lives were lost. At Pcnsakan, Winconsin, 30 lives were lost and the whole town burnt. London, October 1.
At this season’s wool sales, 36,189 bales were sold to date. The market opened with Id to per pound in advance for all descriptions. This has since increased to fully 2d. The Russian Prince Alexis is expected to arrive with the Russian fleet at Mew York this week. Thence he will proceed overland to Washington and San Francisco. Subscriptions in aid of the Chicago sufferers were made at the Merchants’ Exchange, San Francisco, at the rate of 500 dollars a minute.
The prisoners in the Nevada States Prison at Carson made, a desperate attempt to escape. They wounded nearly the entire guard, and 20 of them escaped to the mountains. Seven were re-captured and the rest shot.
'Jhe steamer Dacotah is receiving new boilers at New York, and other alterations. She will be ready for sea at Christinas, and is expected to prove the fastest boat on the line. COMMERCIAL. New Zealand flax, 1353 bales realised full rates Medium and partly cleaned were sold at L 29 ; good and flue cleaned at L 32 to L 33 10s.
In the com market, since the 11th September, a fall of from 6d to Is per quarter taken place, owing to millers being stocked. The quotation for Ne.\y Zealand wheat is 62s per quarter, but much of the New Zealand wheat lately arrived has been in bad condition, and only saleable at 45s for cattle feed or starefl making. The cause o f the damage is supposed to be bad harvesting. For tallow there has been a fair amount of competition Muttqn tallow is quoted at 33s to 43, and beef do. at 36a to 425. 'I he sale qf New: Zealand stopka has . been retarded by the heavy parcels' being brought into the market, but since the consolidation of the bonds the prices hare been highly satisfactory.
New Yohk. Wool met With pood enquiry during the month. The arrivals were 33,222 bales New Zealand, and 84 522 Australian. Fleeces sold from Id to 14d higher; ' Flax is dull. Most of that offered was bought in at L 25 to L 27 per ton. Only 400 bales medium to good were sold at L 24 to L 33 10s. Tallow is in good demand at 37s to 435, . S&U Francisco, The wheat is inactive at> 14oL 50 cents, per cental. Flour is at 7 dels. 75 cent*., in sacks of 1961b5. V The latest telegrams from Liverpool quote wheat at 13s per cental. , ; 4 Melbourxjs, October 27. 1 be Customs Bill has passed the Legislative Council. ; ■ r - New Hops, to arrive, 2s 4d. Samples have been received by the mail. The schooner Helen, just arrived, reports the loss of the Loch Leven, which left Melbourne, for London, on the 23rd October. S|je ,was wrecked on King’s Island, The captain was lost; the mate was on board the helm. The Loch Leven was a vessel of 1210 tons, commanded by Captain Branscombe. She had on board 6523 bales of wool, 92 bales of tallow, and other valuable cargo. The acceptances for the Cup are :—Glencoe, Nimblefoot, Harrier, Mermaid, Little Dick, Barbelle, Lapdog, Bomula (? Romulus), Bylong, Lottery, Barron, Foam, Monk, Valentine, Pearl, Praetor, . Duke of Montrose, Pyrrhus, Hamlet, Rambler, Aramia, Clealite, Saladin, Irish King, Miss Jessie, Lord of Lorn.
Blu?f, Nor. 9th Melbourne, November 4. The Taiarua, Captain John McLean, ar. ri\red at noon.to-day, left on the 4th. She brings 334 tons of .cargo and 58 horses. Has 23 chief and 51 steerage passengers. The Lock Leveh is a total wreck on King’s Island. A quantity of wool has been salvaged by the Tararura and other steamers. Captain Branscotnbe was drowned in attempting to get on board to save his effects. Mr Rutledge is improving. The Henderson action for libel agains the Daily Telegraph articles in reference to the sunawading affair, has resulte4 in a verdict for the plaintiff; damages one farthing, Improper intimacy was strenuously denied, but kissing in the presence of the husband was admitted. A meeting was held at the Criterion Hotel to express sympathy and get op a fund to recoup the Telegraph law costs. A considerable sum was collected. The Assembly, after much opposition, carried a bonus Of three thousand pounds in favor of the ex-Speaker, Sir F. Milrphy, instead of * jieusiou. -
