THE VOLUNTEERS.
A match was fired this mornirg between the Artillery and the No. 2 Compiny I»ities, resulting from a challenge from the former company. The weather was anything but favorable for rifle shooting, a strong gale blowing across the range, and heavy showers of rain rendering the targets at times quite invisible. As will be seen the Artillery are the winners by 37 points, Gun. T. Muir being their highest scorer with 48 points. Corporal Cowie is the highest scorer on the other side with 42. The great small-bore match for LI 50 aside—between Mr Walker, of the Thames, and Ensign Christie, of West Taieri, arising out of a challenge issued by the former —will be fired off on the 15th inst. The site of the contest will be chosen by a committee of Volunteer officers, after the arrival of Mr Walker, who is coming down by the next Northern steamer, and will, of course, be in a locality unknown to either of the competitors. .
