CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.
; At the annual meeting of members last night the Directors’ annual report was submitted. We make the following extracts from it:— “In presenting their report for the year ending < 'etober, 1871, your Directors rejoice to be able to congratulate the members on the increasing success of the Society, and the interest still" taken. in iff by the public. During the nine years of the Society,s existence, its operations and usefulness have gradually ienreased ; and it is to be hoped that it will soon reach the zenith of its ambition- -the possession of a valuable property, clear of debt, and a full purse besides. Although at present tbe Society never denies the really needy some temporary relief, the possession of a good fund would justify a much larger extension of this, the mgin object of the Society. You,r Directors, in reviewing the career of the Society from the time of its formation (nine years ago), and .while alive to the piapy obstacles with which it has to contend, cannot arrive at any other conc'.usioo than that the Society - has the confidence and sympathy of the public, as shown by its support-—in fact, the Society is a ‘ people’s Society.’ The people look-for their ‘ New Year’s treat ’ in our games, and the poor in our midst look for that relief which it is the object of the Society to afford. The Society is also alive to its responsibility to the risiilg generation, and is not neglectful of the interests of education. While enjoying the manly sports as exhibited at our annual gatherings, your directors have also been pleased to witness the lively competition of our _youth at the school children’s examinations for the Society’s prizes This feature your directors would also like to see extended. They cannot leave this subject without recording their deep gratitude to those gentlemen outside the directory, who have rendered such valuable assistance in conducting the school children’s examination, and especially, to the-Rev. Mr-Stuart, who, all along, has taken a warm interest in the affairs of the Society, ” The judge? of school prizes recommended that at the next gathering, l prizes should be offered for the two best essays, biographical and literary, of one’of the Scottish poets,— say Allan Ramsay ; and that two prizes should be open for competition by children in any elementary school in the Province, on,given subjects. Mr Callender was elected president; Mr Kircaldy was re elected vice-president; Mr Ramsay, treasurer; aud Mr W. S. Douglas, secretary. ■
