Passenger list: —Sir William Stawell, Messrs Gay, Davidson, Mulligan, Pritchard, and six in the steerage. Melbourne, October 14th. Mr Duffy is seriously indisjwsed with a bronchial affection. The proposed annuity of LIOOO to Sir Francis Murphy, the late Speaker, was opposed, but the Bill nevertheless passed the second reading by 32 to 21. It was further opposed in Committee, and postponed. It is announced that Parliament wilwldjourn in the first week of November until April. The Government —acting on Colonel Sankey’s report, only secure tho present water supply, and the proposed water supply, and the proposed work will not be 2>roceefied with until they can secure the services of a competent engineer to superintend them. Immense excitement, amounting to a perfect furore, prevails regarding Bendigo mining stock. The Sabbatarians are still moving in the matter of the opening of the Cerberus and other places of amusement on Sundays. At the inquest on the supposed murder of Mrs Marriott, the jury returned an open verdict Mr Fenwick has been elected Mayor of Melbourne. The Earl aud Countess of Belmore are visiting Lord Canterbury at Toorak. The Earl proceeds shortly on a trip to Tasmania. The Government have announced their intention to submit to the House a vote of LIO,OOO to employ the unemployed in filling in disused quarries and other works of public utility. A man named Graham, who alleges that he is the son of a rich brewer of that name, lately deceased, has arrived to claim the estates against Mr Graham’s widow. Much litigation is expected. The solar eclipse expedition to Cape York will probably start in December. Adelaide and Victorian flour is at Ll2 10s to LI3. New Zealand barley is at 3s 4d ; wheat is at 4s Id ; and oats at 3s Id to 3s sd.
Sydney. The schooner Sea Ripple has been seized for smuggling. Tlie Defiance brings the news that the Tanna natives' have killed and eaten Mr Grutt, planter. The captain and crew of the Margaret Jane bolted with her, leaving the owners on shore.
A serious charge has been brought against a minister of religion. The quarter’s revenue shows an increase of L 57,001), chiefly on Customs duties. The Rev. Mr Bailey has been committed for trial for marrying persons under age. A public dinner will be held to celebrate the inauguration by Victoria of the first protective tarritf in the Colonies.
