Religious. —We are informed that the "Rev. John Gow, of Hokitika, has accepted the call from the St. Andrew’s Church, of this City, and is expected to arrive hy the first Melbourne steamer touching at Hokitika, which, we believe will be the first of October, reaching Dunedin in ordinary course in eight days. We have to congratulate St Andrews congregation, and Presbyterians generally, on the near prospect they have of welcoming an able minister to their midst. We would remind our Port Chalmers’ readers that Mr Sykes’ entertainment takes place at Dodson’s Commercial Rooms to-night. Lodge Celtic 477 S.C., will meet at the Masonic Rail to-morrow evening. Bye-law No. VIII.—A Bye-law of the Council of the City of Dunedin, made under Section 180 of the Municipal Corporatio s Act, 1867.” A Bye-law to restrain any person from riding or driving round an angle or corner of any street at other than a walking pace. In pursuance of the powers and provisions contained in Section ISO of part xiii. of the “ Municipal Corporation Act, 1867,” the Council of the City of Dunedin, ordain as follows, that is to say:— Any person guilty of either of the following offences withinjthe City of Dunedin, shall, on being convicted of any such offence, be liable to pay any penalty not exceeding (L 5) Five Pounds, that Is to say : Any person riding or driving any horse or other animal, either with or with out a vehicle round an angle or corner of any street or public thoroughfare within the City or within (3) three feet of the apex of any such corner, at other than a walking pace. JOHN REID MACKENZIE at his office opposite the Criterion Hotel, is now engaged as a Sworn Broker in putting titles in the new Register, and begs to point out to his friends, and owners of property in general, a few of the advantages gained by adopting the Torren’s system of Registration Title however long and intricate guaranteed by the Crown and all defects cured. The cost of conveyance, mortgages, leases, and settlements, reduced to twelve shillings and reconveyances, five shillings. A large number of title deeds, into which holes might be picked every time the land is dealt with —all conditions of sale and abstracts avoided. The proprietor draws his title direct from the crown instead of holding a title linked to previously existing dates. A fresh certificate is issued after every dealing with the land. Lands held in grant cost two shillings aud a halfpenny in the pound of value ; whereas, land which have been dealt with cost Ll 7s 2£d in the pound of value to register. All lands sold by the Crown prior to Ist February lest must bo specially put on the new Registrar, and the old deeds surrendered before the benefits of the Act are experienced. l and sold hy the crown subsequently must be dealt with under the Act.
