The gold-headed staff used constantly by President Lincoln at the White House has been bequeathed to Mr John Bright, M.P., in terms of the late President’s will, '‘asa token of esteem which the la‘e President felt for him because of his unwearied zeal and defence of the United States in suppressing the civil rebellion of the United States.” It is said that Thiers urges on the Military Committee of the Assembly the necessity of having large armaments and a normal effective force of five hundred thousand men in the army.
