The jury returned a verdict of murder, but recommended the prisoner to mercy, on the ground of there being no evidence of animous on his part towards the deceased. He was sentenced to death. Christchurch, September 7. At the criminal sittings to-day, Helen Peck, charged with stealing LIU, and William Ward, charged with stealing a cheque, were acquitted. These cases concluded the session. At a meeting of the Kaiapoi farmers last night, it was unanimously resolved to petition the Assembly in favor of a protective duty on grain. Greymouth, Sept. 5, A large and influential meeting was held last night at the Napoleon township, when a resolution was unanimously passed asking the General Government to take over the management of the south-west goldfields. A meeting for a similar object is to be held at Greymouth to-night.
