EDUCATION.
To the. Editor. Sir, —The clevotiou of Mr Haughton to his faith is really edifying; he is beyond all doubt a true son of the Church. Some time ago the Kector of the High School had occasion to show that certain of the statements made by Bishop Moran with regard to the cost of education in Otago were inaccurate and apparently somewhat insincere. But there was a Nemesis, in the shape of a member of Parliament, ready to avenge the injuria spretcc formal of his spiritu il guide. The Education Bill is under discussion. Mr Haughton retributively states that the High School of Otago is not satisfactory, i.e, it has a Rector who has dared to impugn the correctness of a statement made by his (Mr H.’s) Bishop. Further, he says that all the brightest boys in Otago are sent to Nelson or Christchurch. If a return could be got of the number and of the attainments of the boys belonging to other Provinces who are attending the three upper schools of Otago, Canterbury, and Kelson, it would at once show that the hou. member for the Lakes is ever ready, if not like the ancient martyrs to die for his faith, at least to lie for it most energetically.—l am, &c.
