Educational. The Otago Schoolmaster’s Association met this clay. There was a full attendance of members ; but it having been impossible to procure a copy of the Education Bill, the meeting was adjourned until Saturday next, 9th inst. Roslyn Election. —Mr McGlashan addressed the electors of Roslyn Jin Caversham Drill Shed on Thursday, and at North East Valley School House last night; at both places there was a fair attendance. Resolutions were carried unanimously, “That Mr McGlashan is a fit and proper person to represent the district of Rislyn in the General Assembly.” The Rifle Match. —Mr J. W. Walker, of Auckland, has accepted the terms on which Mr Christie, of the Taieri, took up his challenge ; and the match is to be fired at Dunedin on November 20. All the arrangements have been concluded, and the stakes, LISO aside, have been duly lodged. Both men are said to be practising hard, and a keen contest will be the natural result. Gaol Return.—The following is the state of H. M. Gaol, Dunedin, for the week ending 19th August:—Awaiting trial, C men, 1 woman ; under remand, 2 man, 0 women ; fieri al servitude, 8S men, 0 women ; hard abor, 46 men, 9 women; imprisonment, 1 men, 0 women ; in default of bail, 2 men, debtors, 2. Total. 147 men ; 10 women. Received during the week, 9 men, 2 women ; discharged, 5 men, 1 woman. One of the prisoners in default of bail is also at labor. Princess Theatre. —The “extra” performance of the Comedy and Bnrlesquo Company, which was to hav« taken place on Thursday evening, but owing to the inclemency of the weather was deferred, will come off this evening. The programme consists of “Theyouth who never sawa woman,” “Toodles,” and “ the Nymph of the Lurleyburg.” The prices to every part of the house are, on this occasion, to be reduced one half, and as there is eyery prospect of a continuance of fair weather, a full house may reasonably be expected. Intecolonial Exhibition, An exhibition of fermented drinks, open to all the Australian Colonies, will be held in November next. In view of the probability of there being a free trade arrangement entered into between New Zealand aud South Australia as regards their respective productions, this exhibition will afford producers here an excellent opportunity of displaying their spirits, ales, porters, liquors, cordials, &c., in a new market. For all particulars intending exhibitors should early place themselves in communication with Messrs Darliug and Co. of Princes street, who are, we believe, authorised to make all necessary arrangements. The office of Union Permanent Building Society willbcoponcd this (Saturday) evening, snd every Saturday evening, for receipt of application for shares, subscriptions, &c., frem 7.30 to 8.30. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Commercial Building and Investment Society for receiving subscriptions. &c., will be held on Monday evening, September 4th, from six to eight o’clock. Mr McGlashan announces his intention to address the electors of Roslyn as follows : At Kaikorai drill shed on Monday. At Pine hill (Mr Gray’s), on Tuesday/, aud at the Presbyterian Meeting House, Maori hill, ou Wednesday next, at 8 o’clock on each evening.
