A VOICE FROM MORNINGTON.
To the Editor.
Sir—Allow me to say a few words iu reference to the anticipated establishment of two hotels in the hitherto quiet suburban district of Mornington. It is well known there is no through traffic in the place to render houses of accomodation a matter of necessity for the public convenience, and the inhabitants are composed chiefly of the workingclasses. There are already four general provision stores, two of which have the bottle license, and are in every respect quite ample, and more than ample, to supply the homely fireside comforts of the district; for the amount paid for those licenses is scarcely realised by the profits arising from the trade done there at present. Now, sir, iu looking at this thing from a rational point, wc will suppose the two hotels to be established, when we know they must each come into the receipt of LSOO per annum, or they cannot live at all. That together will be LIOOO ; and 1 would like to know how it is possible to extract LIOOO a year for drinking purposes alone from such a district as Mornington without causing a grievous amount of improvidence and demoralisation. Indeed, sir, the picture is too true, and the facts are prominent. Many a poor child will severely suffer by going dinnerlcss and supperlesh to bed, If nothing worse ; and I do trust the Magistrates will pause before committing themselves to such as, I think, may be safely termed a “ moral error ” for the sake of a few pounds in revenue, the value of which would be counterbalanced ten times over by its evil effects on the people the very first year of its existence.“-I am, Ac. Mornington.
