(FROM gkeville’s telegram company, REUTER’S AGENTS.) Oamaru, August 19. At a quarter past eight this morning Robert Miller shot himself with a rifle in the press room of the Oamaru Times. The bullet entered under his chin and passing right through his head, went through the ceiling of the room and out at the roof. Heath was instantaneous. An inquest is now being held. It is expected a verdict of temporary insanity will be returned. Wellington, August 19. The steamer Taranaki arrived at New Plymouth at 7 a.ra. The mail was landed at 7.30, and Greville’s agent at once despatched a special courier with the telegrams to Opunake, who arrived at 1 p.m. Auckland, August 19. ADDITIONAL FRENCH SUMMARY. Paris, July 8. The French Government demanded an early evacuation of the forts near Paris occupied by the Germans. Bismarck declined to promise a positive compliance with the request. A general estimate of the supplementary elections show that, of the U0 deputies elected, 120 are republicans, 2 Bonapartists, and 8 legitimists. The republican party is divided into / 5 moderates and 25 extreme radicals. Paris has raised a loan to rebuild the monuments.
The array is be re-organised to make an effective force of 230,000 men. Count de Chambord announces that he leaves France in order not to countenance any agitation in his favor. He praises the army, and calls upon the people to rally round the Bourbon throne.. The proclamation has caused great excitement and is generally condemned. Paris, July 9. The French ship Severence was wrecked on the coast of the Cape of Good Hope. All hands lost, 150 bodies have been washed ashore. 16,000 Communists have been released by order of the government, and 16,000 are held to be tried in 8 pads. The French Government have paid Switzerland two million of francs, as reimbursement for the maintenance of French troops, when they took refuge in that country. It is officially stated that Thiers’ letter to the Pope is a forgery. July 12.
There are continual quarrels about the territory occupied by the Germans. The evacuation of the Seine Inferieur, Ture, and Somme, has commenced. Count Polignac is dead. The building and stoves for the manufacture of projectiles at Yincennes ■were destroyed by an explosion caused by the unloading of powder from a cart. Many persons at a great distance vreie struck by bullets. General Paladines has been appointed commandant of the 14th military division of France. Rome, July 5, The King held a grand review today, and was enthusiastically received. There was an unusual attendance of Cardinals and Church dignitaries at his court. The Pope refuses to accept the Papal guarantee offered by the Italian Government, which recognises him as the head of the Church and prescribes for him royal honor, inviolability of person etc. He insists on the complete restoration of the Papal territories. Germany, The Emperor has nearly recovered from his attack of rheumatism, The Senate passed a law prohibiting gambling at Spa. The Bavarian troops made a grand entry into Munich. Spain, A stormy debate has taken place on Cuban affairs in the Spanish Cortes. A vote of censure on the Government was proposed, but withdrawn. A proposition to send 30,000 men to Cuba, is rumored. The present Cabinet is to be dis-: solved, and a Radical Government formed. It is said that Prince Dissy, son of Queen Isabella, objects to a regency. The Duke de Montpeusier is to be proposed to the monarchical party in the event of a restoration of the Bourbons to the French throne. ENGLISH PARLIAMENTARY, &c. London, June 23. The New Turk Tribune's correspondent states that serious complications have arisen between Germany and England. Bismarck proposed to enter into a treaty for the purchase of Heligoland, but the British Government declined to, sell it. Bismarck replied th v.t the acquisition of Heligoland is necessary for the protection of the German coast,
and that he looked upon its possession by a foreign power as a standing menace to Germany. Earl Granville replied that England will study its own interest, and that the wish of Germany to acquire the island did not constitute a right to it, as the island had never been under German rule. The Treaty of Washington was ratified after an animated debate. July 10. The Canadian ports will soon cease to be honored by a British fleet, a Commodore’s ship alone remaining. The Prince of Wales, Princesses Christian and Louise were present at the Waverly celebration and danced in several ch arncters of Lord of the Isles, Li, Vernon, Waverly, Flora Mclvcr, Madge Wildfire, Amy Robsart, etc. .... The Princess Louise will distribute the Wimbledon prizes AMERICA. San Francisco. July 20. A great riot occurred at New York on Juy 12th, the Catholic Irish turning out in immense force to prevent violence by (.rangemen on the occasion of the procession on the anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne. The National Guard and Police were fired upon by the mob of Irish, numbering several thousands. The troops swept the streets with musketry, killing 60 to 100 rioters, and wounding 300 to 400, many mortally. The police’ have arrested many rioters, who who will be tried, and seized a great quantity of arms at the head quarters of the Order of Hibernians. The riot was crushed immediately. The affair caused an intense feeling throughout the United States, reviving the old anti Catholic sentiment. The American 5 per cent, loan to replace old bonds at higher rates, was not successful, and probably will be withdrawn from the European and American markets. The funeral of Thad Lincoln, the youngest son of the late President, took place at Kew York yesterday. A terrible railway accident occurred at Nashville, Tennessee,j on the morning of July 19. Fifteen persons were killed and 23 wounded
The Fourth of July was celebrated spirt dly throughout the United States. There were few casualties.
A fire occurred at Treka, California, last week. The loss is estimated at 300,000 dollars.
A procession in honor of t' e 25th Anniversary! o the Pontificate of Pius IX was held in San Francisco on July 2nd. It was an imposing affair, the Civic and Military numberin. 14,000 people. The Italians will celebrate the occupation of Koine as the capital of Italy by a procession on Sunday next.
Bramberger, late private secretary to Jeff. Davis, when president of the Southern Confederacy, was arrested last week at San Francisco on two charges of forgery. He sprang overboerd from the vessel in the harbour on which he was attempting to escape to Mexico, but was rescued. He has been committed for trial.
Explorations along the line projected for the Canadian and Pacific Kailway have been commenced on b. th sides of the continent, under the auspices of the Canadian Govern; Went. Active operations against the Apaches have been commenced by the American troops in Arizona, acting in conjunction with the Mexican troops at Sahora. A fire in Marysvil e, Califoma, yesterday, destroyed a hundred thousand dollars worth of property. The New Zealand beer from Dunedin, received by last steamer, was well liked in San Francisco. The samples of New Zealand hemp forwarded by the same vessel were highly approved and a quantity could be sold here at L 22 to L 24 per ton of 2,000 lbs. Contributions of seventy tons of manufactured articles of all descriptions have been received from Japan, and eleven tons from China, for exhibition at the San Francisco Mechanics’ Fair, v/hich opens next mouth.
